COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

ABOUT

Arise Collective follows through on the promise of our mission by shining a light on the voices and stories of women in ways that bring people together to promote healing, compassion and understanding across lines of difference, as well as challenge the mindsets of those outside of prison about the collateral consequences that we both unwittingly and intentionally place on people trying to make it after a criminal conviction.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

REENTRY
SIMULATIONS

It is impossible to fully understand the reality of life in prison if you have not served time yourself, but being able to relate to this experience can serve as a bridge.

We offer to the community a powerful Reentry Simulation that highlights the struggles and challenges faced by individuals who are transitioning back into society, bringing people together to experience a taste of how it feels to walk in the shoes of someone post-incarceration.

NEW MENTOR
TRAINING

The long-term effects of a healthy mentoring relationship can be life-changing. Having a stable support system has been shown to increase a woman’s chance for success and reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

We offer a wide array of relational supports for women in the weeks and months following incarceration. New Mentor training is the first step, and prepares interested community members with information to effectively serve women in this capacity.

Music, dance, writing and arts and crafts are powerful ways to unlock the pain of deeply-buried trauma, heal, and give voice to stories of redemption, strength and hope.

Conviction: Songs of Hope from Women In Prison was written by women in songwriting classes sponsored by an Arise Collective chaplain in the prison. The 25-foot Stitching Stories: A Prison Awareness Quilt was crocheted by women as they survived COVID together in prison.

Our informative and often interactive presentations raise awareness about issues of incarceration, the needs of the women we support, and the need for community support and engagement in this work.

Arise Collective staff, board and women in our programs — as well as alumna — are available to speak with church and other faith-based groups and, community/civic organizations.
